How to Read an NFL Over/Under

What a total of 45.5 means, how the over and under are graded, and how often NFL games went over the closing total each season since 2015.

Informational only. This guide describes public game data; it is not betting advice, and no wagering is offered or arranged here.

The total (the over/under) is the betting market's estimate of how many points both teams will score together. If they combine for more, the over wins; fewer, the under wins; exactly the number, it is a push.

The number

With a total of 45.5, a final score that adds to 46 or more is an over, and 45 or fewer is an under. Who wins the game does not matter: 30–16 and 23–23 are both 46, both overs. A whole-number total such as 44 can land exactly, and a bet on either side is refunded. Totals are usually priced at −110 each way, so the break-even rate is 52.38%, the same as spreads.

How often do games go over?

Slightly less than half the time. From 2015 through 2025, NFL games went over the closing total 48.8% of the time (1465–1535–28).

That can look strange next to the averages: games scored 45.7 points on average while the average closing total was 45.3. How can scoring beat the line on average and still go under more often? Because a few shootouts pull the average up. A 38–35 game counts as one over, however far past the number it lands, while the typical game finishes a little under: the median game landed half a point below its total. The average and the over rate answer different questions, and only the over rate is how a total is graded.

NFL games 2015–2025 with a closing total, regular season and playoffs.

The over rate has run from 44.5% (2022) to 53.9% (2024). The lines do follow scoring: after the low-scoring 2022 and 2023 seasons the average total fell to 43.1, and when scoring came back in 2024 the over hit more often. But over roughly 285 games, one season's over rate swings by about three points either way on chance alone, so most of that range is noise.

How far totals miss

Like spreads, totals are the middle of a wide range. From 2015 to 2025, the final combined score missed the closing total by a standard deviation of 13.2 points. A total of 45.5 is compatible with a 27-point game and with a 64-point game; it is the market's center, not its prediction of the score.

Reading the Totals Dial

The NFL Totals Dial estimates each game's combined score from five factors (how many points the two teams' games have produced over their last 16 and last 4, whether there is a roof, how strong both teams are together, and whether it is a division game) and subtracts the posted total. The difference is its edge: the needle leans right for the over and left for the under. Its back-test sits near 50%, and it says so, for the same reasons covered in why spread models land near a coin flip.
